Renardo and Jacqueline Ovalle are producers with whom we have worked for many years. Very committed to their employees on their farms, we have developed with them a project for a regional coffee that makes sense. 80% of our MAYA coffee comes from Qawale project.
Qawale Program:
Qawale is an agronomic, technical, logistical and above all financial support program for the coffee community in the Huehuetenango region. It is structured around 4 pillars:
1- Better remunerating according to the quality provided.
2- Support quality through farming practices training for producers
3- Offer a local logistical solution for collecting coffee
4- Respect the work of producers
Today, around 400 neighboring farms (many are very small farmers) choose to participate in the Qawale program and the program is growing. This opportunity leads some members of the community to hope to make coffee their only source of income and therefore to assert themselves as a true coffee producer! Currently, the only other opportunity in the region is funded by migrant money earned in the United States.
A concrete impact for our MAYA coffee:
86% of them did not see other possibilities to make a living outside of coffee in the region
100% covered their production costs last year
100% said that working with the Qawale program was better than selling elsewhere
71% said the potential premium quality was a key benefit
43% reinvested quality premiums on their farms
71% noted in their community pride and hope of a life more worthy through Qawale program
100% have stated that they understood what they can do to improve their quality and that they had learned from the technical assistance offered by this program.
71% said they had conserved wooded areas or planted reserve areas which will be compensated by the government of Guatemala.
